Marijuana makes almost everything better. Food, coffee, movies, even planetariums. But let’s be honest: There is nothing weed improves quite so much as sex.

Or so many people say. But is there any truth to this claim? Is pot really an aphrodisiac?

Well, as with almost anything in life, the answer to that question depends. It depends on who you are, how you react to marijuana, and how much you enjoy sex in the first place. Believe it or not, not everyone does.

Marijuana Sex

But cannabis does seem to have a peculiar effect on the nasty. It probably won’t get you started by itself, but it could make the experience so much better.

First, though, we should note that weed has different effects on different people. Many people who try it can’t stand the experience and never use it again. Others become lifelong stoners at a young age.

This variation goes for sex as much as anything else. Pot makes coitus more pleasant for some people, less pleasant for others – and for some it makes no difference at all.

How does marijuana affect the experience?

That said, plenty of people report that a few puffs can make going at it more fun. This is especially true if both of you smoke. Or, if you’re a certain kind of lucky, all three of you.

This means heightened pleasure, increased emotional connection, and reduced sensitivity. Less sensitivity, in turn, allows for longer sex – if that’s your thing.

For some people, the effect is so powerful they prefer not to have sex without weed. That can be more than a little constraining, but to each his own.

Of course, the logistics of toking while screwing can be difficult. Passing a joint back and forth in certain positions can be a lot of fun, but you’ll have more trouble trying to use a gravity bong missionary style.

It should be said that you don’t even have to have a partner to improve sex with pot. Going solo can also be a lot of fun, and marijuana can make that much better, too.

Limited scientific data

So why does weed do all this? Honestly, we don’t really know. There isn’t much scientific data on the subject, and what we have suggests marijuana is not an aphrodisiac at all. Many potheads would attest otherwise, but the research is at something of a stalemate.

Of course, scientists are almost universally skeptical that any natural aphrodisiac exists. They prefer the chemical model of erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra. Spanish Fly, a notorious “aphrodisiac,” is bogus, as are other concoctions.

Weed sex

But it’s not far-fetched to believe cannabis has a real effect on sex. Drugs make us feel better, at least for a while. Sex does the same thing, at least for a while. Bring the two together and there will often be fireworks.

Scientists may simply be hung up on the strict definition of “aphrodisiac,” which is a chemical that increases libido. Libido, of course, is sexual energy and arousal. So to qualify as an aphrodisiac, the drug would have to make men erect. Reports vary, but there isn’t much evidence marijuana does this.

Still, it definitely makes the whole thing better for many people. So the next time you have the chance, consider trying a little grass to spice up your sex. If it works for you, awesome. If not, you can always keep having sex without weed and weed without sex. Not as much fun, maybe, but still pretty damn fun.
